Finding a need for volleyball

This fall the Leaside Volleyball League will be expanding a program that became successful because of the intuition of two Leasiders: John Child and Christian Redmann.

Child, the founder and coach at the club, saw in 2010 that there were some kids who could not play because they did not make a rep or school team.

Child reached out to Redmann, whom he was mentoring to make the Olympics — Child himself is a three-time Olympian and bronze medalist in beach volleyball — to start a house league indoor program.

They founded the Leaside Volleyball League that year with 100 registered members. Designed for girls and boys aged 9 to 15, the league aims to be a fun environment.

They play out of Havergal College every Sunday for an hour and a half. Over the past couple of years the league has grown to 250 kids with more on a waiting list.

Starting this fall, the League will also be playing out of the Bishop Strachan School.
