Raising funds for refugees can be made fun for all too

When Northlea United Church decided to raise money to sponsor a refugee family, members also decided they would like to have some fun, and broad participation from the congregation and the neighbourhood.

We all know about April showers – well, this one is after church on Sunday, April 3 and is the gift-version, rather than the rain version. For those who like to plan ahead, there is a gift registry at www.northleaunited.ca. Those attending will enjoy finger food and games.

There’s another special event on Saturday, April 30, Spring to New Life, a musical evening with special guests including Theresa Toba and David Warrack. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. with a chance to bid on silent auctions. Other musical guests include a massed choir of neighbourhood choristers. $25.

For May, Pawsitively Pets is organizing a neighbourhood fair and street party for Saturday, May 7 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., using the street in front of the church, as well as the church lawns. $10 per child, with that price including one adult. There will be face painting, pony rides, a bouncy castle, animal interactions and other kid activities. There will be food for sale, organized by the church.
