From Leaside 100
Tuesday, April 23 is THE day – the official commemoration of the incorporation of the Town of Leaside in 1913. Join us at the Leaside Library, 165 McRae Dr. for a 9:25 a.m. start. Councillor John Parker will be the MC, and special guests include Premier Kathleen Wynne and MP John Carmichael.
A quilt wall hanging designed and made by ex-Leasider Margaret Carscadden will be unveiled, before all present get the opportunity to enjoy the exhibit of archival photos of The Layers of Leaside. The exhibit will be in the Community Room of the library until Sunday, April 28 so you can spend some time enjoying all the layers of our history.
A short while later, a stroll up Crandall Rd. to Bessborough school will allow you to see the two historical plaques commemorating the incorporation of the town, and the importance of the railways in those early days. The plaques will later be permanently placed in Leaside Village, near the Canadian Northern Railways original building (now Longo’s).
The Leaside 100 Gala is Saturday, April 27 starting at 5:30 p.m. at All Canadian Self Storage, 1 Laird Dr. Tickets are going fast. Either book through www.eventbrite.com, or by phoning Virginia at 416-392-0215. Tickets are $125 each, with a special price of $100 for those over 60. You’ll enjoy champagne, a gourmet buffet dinner and dessert and entertainment galore, headed by our Leaside celebrity MCs David Sparrow and Deb McGrath.
Volunteers wanted: Whether you’re a high school student looking for some of your 40 community hours, or someone in the community with a few hours to give, we can use your help. The first opportunity is during the week of April 23-28 at the library, another is the next Sunday, May 5, when there will be community walks where assistance would be helpful.
